Sacred Heart Kamuning @ 75, declared a Diocesan Shrine
October 1, 2016
Today the Sacred Heart Parish in Kamuning, Quezon City celebrated the 75th year of its foundation. The day was highlighted by a Solemn Eucharistic celebration presided by Most. Rev. Honesto Ongtioco, the bishop of the Diocese of Cubao, in the presence of around 80 concelebrating priests, religious, and a vast congregation of the faithful who spilled over to the tents set up outside the church.
The mass began with the opening of the Holy Door through which devotees enter and gain indulgences. The occasion featured also the declaration of the church as the Diocesan Shrine of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, hence the parish would be known as the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish–Shrine.
The beginnings of the parish can be traced back to the years when Kamuning, then known as Barrio Obrero, was designated as a housing project for government employees in the late 1930s. Residents would go to nearby Christ the King Seminary to attend mass. Eventually, an association of residents decided that they would ask the Most Reverend Michael Doherty, Archbishop of Manila to establish a parish in the area.
The residents raised funds to build the church which was finished in 1941. It was canonically erected on October 3, 1941 and dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus as its patron. Fr. Theodore Buttenbruch SVD was appointed to be its first parish priest.
During the mass, there was a short historical narrative tracing the development of the different parish organizations, and the recognition of the parish priests (all SVDs) who had served the parish. The current bishop (Ongtioco) had made an agreement with the SVD that the parish would be in SVD hands as long as the SVD is able to administer it.
The present parish priest, Fr. Jerome Marquez SVD, was profuse in his words of thanks to all who had helped in enabling the parish to reach 75 years in existence and in attaining its Shrine status. Indeed, the dynamic leadership of the SVD priests and the unwavering support of the parishioners ensure more years of spiritual growth and development guided and inspired by the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus.
