PHC holds 2nd SVD Mission Awards

PHC holds 2nd SVD Mission Awards

Six years ago, as the centennial celebration of the SVD presence in the Philippines was coming to a close, SVD Philippines, through PHC, organized and held the 1st SVD Mission Awards at the Saint Jude Catholic School in Manila on January 29, 1010.  This year, as a part of the 75th founding anniversary of the Sacred Heart Parish in the Diocese of Cubao and its installation as a National Shrine, the 2nd SVD Mission Awards took place on November 30, 2016 at the Institute of Biology Auditorium of UP Diliman in Quezon City.

The following awards were given:  St. Arnold Janssen Mission Award to Atty. Teresita Gines; St. Joseph Freinademetz Mission Award to the Philippine Catholic Lay Mission and the Spring in the Desert Community; St. Margaret Mary Alacoque Mission Award to Tita Calasanz; Divine Word Mission Award to Asuncion Sison; Communio Mission Award to the Valdez-Lopez-Badlis-Jovellanos Family; Kamuning Mission Award to the Catholic Women's League; Sacred Heart Mission Award to Florante "Dan" Payawal, the Daughters of Mary Immaculate, and Dr. Valentin Ecalnir; and the Padre Doro Mission Award to Fr. Jose San Juan, Sr., SVD.  A special citation was given to the DZMM Teleradyo for its contribution to the media apostolate.

The SVD Mission Awards are given to recognize individuals, groups and institutions, both Catholic and non-Catholic, who have contributed to and/or collaborated with the SVD mission as well as the mission of the Philippine Church.  Specifically, they have made a difference in doing prophetic dialogue with the poor, marginalized, faith seekers or those with no faith community and those from Bother religions and ideologies.

The Provincial Superior of PHC, Fr. Nielo Cantilado, gave the welcome remarks; the General Visitator from Rome, Fr. Arlindo Dias, gave an inspirational speech; and the Bishop of the Diocese of Cubao, Honesto F. Ongtioco, gave the closing remarks.  Citation readers were: Fr. Pablito Tagura, SVD; Sr. Angel Libron, SSpS; Fr. Lino Nicasio, SVD; Fr. Andrew Amanor, SVD; Ms. Vicky Garchitorena; Ms. Nita Trofeo; Fr. Isabelo San Luis, SVD; Mr. Willard Cheng; Fr. Felix Noel Dacquel, SVD; Fr. Alois Ortner, SVD; Fr. Vicente Rayco, SVD and Fr. Raymun Festin, SVD.

The masters of the ceremonies were Ms. Mariz Umali-Tima, a TV news reporter of GMA, and Fr. Antonio Gilberto Marqueses, SVD, a missionary fresh from his studies in Rome.  Ms. Eumee Capili, a finalist in the Tawag ng Tanghalan, competently rendered three popular songs.  Though the program lasted for close to four hours, there was none of the proverbial dull moments and the whole time was thoroughly engaging and enjoyable, thanks to all participants.

The very successful event culminated with the traditional dinner hosted by the event organizers, Fr. Jerome Marquez, SVD and his team from the Sacred Heart Parish Church, now a National Shrine.  Spotted among the guests was Fr. Antolin Uy, SVD, who chaired the Board of Judges composed of highly esteemed personalities: Ms. Fe Hidalgo, Atty. Lorna Kapunan, Ms. Victoria Garchitorena, Engr. Joyce Palakol, Mr. Leo Riigen, Ms. Rina Jimenez David, and Mr. Jay Revestir.
