The Catholic Trade Community Manila commemorated the 150th anniversary of the Society of the Divine Word (SVD) with a day of solemn rites and joyful festivities on September 8, coinciding with the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The celebration began with a rite at the Our Lady of the Poor Prayer Park, followed by a symbolic procession of their images. The procession recalled the inauguration of the first mission house in Steyl, Netherlands, on September 8, 1875, when the Founder, Saint Arnold, entrusted the young Society to the maternal care of Mary. Organizers described the walk as a reminder of the 150-year journey of the SVD—bearing the light of Christ “from everywhere to everyone,” under Mary’s mantle of protection.
A Eucharistic celebration followed, presided over by Father Provincial Mike Layugan. In his homily, he underlined the threefold significance of the day: the Nativity of Mary, the 150 years of the SVD’s foundation, and the honor given to the Society through the Ramon Magsaysay Award, a prestigious award in Asia, recently conferred on Father Flavie Villanueva, SVD, for his work with the Kalinga Center.
Father Layugan also expressed gratitude for the dedication of lay collaborators who continue to sustain the mission. Various arms of Catholic Trade joined in the celebration.
Beyond the liturgy, the community enjoyed fellowship through parlor games and indoor activities. In the evening, a festive dinner was followed by a ballroom dance competition and the selection of “Mr. Catholic Trade.”
The Kalinga Foundation received both titles, but organizers emphasized that the real victory belonged to all groups. Each presentation showcased creativity, dedication, and teamwork, proving that collaboration, more than competition, was the heart of the celebration.
The Catholic Trade Community takes pride in its commitment to inclusivity. Last year, it marked its own centennial with a year-long program of monthly activities. Leaders emphasized that every celebration is not just an event but a witness to “the light of inclusivity, synodality, and oneness.”
As one organizer put it: “When Catholic Trade celebrates, we celebrate as a community. Everyone is a winner when we come together to share our gifts.”
